Couples Counseling is part of Relationship Counseling and we all have many relationships. But the same issues, problems and solutions can appear in all relationships.
Many couples request Couples Counseling because they struggle in their relationship. Common issues include:
• Not feeling heard or allowed to talk
• Avoiding confrontation
• Not being respected
• "Walking on eggshells"
• The other dominates the conversation
•. Frustrated
•. Fear of being hurt
•. Always arguing without resolution
•. Lack of affection
•. The "silent" treatment
•. They are just getting started and want to remove obstacles that might derail them later
It’s not that you are doing something wrong (most of the time) - it’s that you never learned how to do what you want because your role models for relationships couldn’t solve the same issues and you are simply repeating what you learned watching your parents.
When couples struggle, it’s usually because they are duplicating their parents’ styles of communication even if they knew that what their parents did wasn’t working. The reason they (we) do this is because we learn how to live by imitating our role models, our parents. What they do, WE DO, even if we knew if didn’t work for our parents.
When we seek couples counseling, we are really asking to learn a better way, a more effective way, to communicate and “be” with our partner. We aren’t looking for what is wrong with us or blame, we just want the solution.
And the solution is usually very simple: Be honest about your feelings (even if it is scary to admit it) and say what you want and don’t want. There are no rights or wrongs in a relationship, but …. what you want and don’t want MATTER. Then it becomes a negotiation with usually positive results…. Or a realization that you may have picked the wrong partner.
I provide COUPLES COUNSELING to improve relationships, teach safe and effective skills to improve confrontation, establish healthy boundaries and encourage more open affection in our relationships.
